Eraniel railway station comes under the Southern Railway Zone (SR) which was created on 14 April 1951 headquarted at Chennai and it was one of the 6th zones of Indian Railways. The Northern, the North-Eastern, the Southern, the Central, the Eastern and the Western are the zones of Indian Railways. The Southern Railway zone 9,654 kilometres (5,999 mi) was the first zone to be formed. On Sixteenth April 1979 the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil-Kanyakumari railway line was opened , and was then under Madurai Division. Thiruvananthapuram division was formed on 2nd October 1979 with certain staions from Madurai Division. The newly laid Broad Gauge Sections of Madurai Division were transferred to Thiruvananthapuram Division and Meter Gauge sections of Madurai remained same. The Eraniel (ERL) station has 3 lane , where two platforms are there for boarding and for railway crossing nameley Platform 1 & Platform 2 and the other lane for loding blue metals, because here they have a lot of space to store the blue metals.
Though it was connected with Thiruvananthapuram- Nagercoil- Kanyakumari line there are some train which operate to Kanyakumari, Chennai as well as Guruvayoor via Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram.

Extension of Tiruchi-Tirunelveli Intercity Express 22627/22628 up to Thiruvananthapuram as well as Thiruvananthapuram central – Mangaluru 16603/16604 Mavali Express up to Kanniyakumari passes through Eraniel(ERL) Station.
A new overnight express from Velankanni to Kochuveli Via. Thanjavur Jn, Trichy Jn, Pudukkottai, Nagercoil Jn, Eraniel and Thiruvananthapuram central
Kaniyakumari to Vasco-Da-Gama (Goa) daily train via. Thiruvananthapuram central and Ernakulam.
Now the station is optimized and renewed with new platform works and over bridge to cross the railway line.
