Thiruchendur Kavadi Kettu 2018

Thiruchendur Kavadi Kettu for 2018 is going to held on February 20th of this year.

Kavadi Attam (காவடி ஆட்டம்) Burden Dance is a ceremonial sacrifice and offering practiced by devotees during the worship of Lord Murugan. In the southern part of India, Tamilnadu is a well know worship place for Lord Murugan. Here only Lord Muruga’s Six Abodes known as Arupadi Veedu. Of them Thiruchendur is a famous temple at Thoothukudi District near to the shore.

Devotees from various place come here. But from the southern part of India , Kanyakumari district people carry Kavadi for Maasi thiruvila.

When the flag hosted at Thiruchendur for Maasi thiruvila, here devotees from Eraniel, Thingalchanthai, Colachel, Manavalakurichi, Thiruvananthapuram and there surrounding areas will conduct the Kavadi Kettu function.
This year this function is going to be held on February 20th 2018.

Selecting the Kavadi Member

Before 2months the Kavadi Kattu member will be selected from there respective village or street and the count down starts.

The person who is going to take Kavadi will be in fasting far about 41 days. Two to onw week ago the baboon for making Kavadi will be selected the process will start. 3 days before the Kavadi gets a structure and now its ready for the pooja for 3 days in the respective Temples.

Day 1: The Pooja will held two times morning & evening with the Kavadi Murugan and Pandaram

Day 2: The same process will continue.

Day 3: Morning Pooja will held as normal while the evening has a special pooja with the Kavadi Kettu melam.

On this day night the Kavadi Murugan and Kavadi pandaram along with the people go to buy oil from Chekkala Street. This is a special oil and the making process is traditional same as olden days. After that the oil is tied in Kavadi with Kalasam and the Kavadi will be decorated with flowers. At early morning the Kavadi will be carried around the streets for special pooja at the devotees home. Paneer is the special liquid which used for the abishekam for Kavadi Vel. This traditional fuction is being held for more than 100years. And the kavadi’s will be back at respective temples at noon and Annathanam will be presented for devotees.

At evening the Kavadi’s at various parts joined together and make a parade and devotees carry it to Thiruchendur by treckking.  On the 3rd day the Kavadi’s will reach Thiruchendur and from that day Abishekam will be held till the 5th day.
